Don’t you wish that mornings could be less stressful? As a working mom of two little guys, I make every effort to start the day off right so that I don’t feel stressed for the rest of the day. Here are a few tips I use for starting my morning off on the right foot.
Great mornings start the night before
The best way to have a great morning is to get organized the night before. Each week night I clean out and pack up the school bag, pick out clothes, set up lunch in the fridge, and even lay out the breakfast plates for the next morning. Then I still have to think about my kids! Ah, the life of a teacher…
Seriously though, the only way I can wake up with a clear head is making sure that the basics are taken care of. Plus, it makes for fewer things I have to worry about before running out the door in the morning!
Get a good night’s rest
Yes, we know the recommended number of hours we should all get, but how many of us actually get them? Then we all walk through the day complaining that we don’t get enough “beauty rest”. One of the things we can do to really take care of ourselves is to get to sleep on the early side. I’ve recently taken to setting my Fitbit alarm to remind me 30 minutes before my ideal bed time that it’s time to start packing up and heading to bed. If I’m not exhausted by the time I hit the sack, I’ll sneak in a little reading before bed, but then it’s off to sleep.
Serene wake up
The one thing I’ve realized that sets my morning off on the right foot is waking up to anything other than the blaring noise of an alarm clock. If only I could be one of those people who wake up at the same time everyday (and still get to work on time!).
Enter Philips Wake-Up Light with Sunrise Simulation. This alarm clock is a total game-changer. It helps to re-set your circadian rhythm (Google it) by waking you up gradually with light. That’s right: this alarm clock shines a dim light that gradually brightens to ensure a peaceful and more natural wake up! How brilliant!
My sister first introduced me to the idea of waking up to light after I explained that I am SO not a morning person, but that I’d like to be (sounds like a New Year’s resolution brewing!) Both she and her husband use wake-up lights and she shared how much she loves them.
I was skeptical at first, but I did a little research (ok, I read everything I could get my hands on) and finally took the plunge to try it out. That was over three years ago, and I’ve been using this wake-up light ever since!
Think about it: don’t you always feel more energetic in the summertime when the sun is shining? Imagine waking up to “sunlight” even during the dreary winter months when the sun doesn’t rise until you are already on your way to work!
There are so many great features on this device: sound options that can be used in conjunction with the light, adjustable alarm volume (so that it doesn’t wake my kids up in the next room!), and the ability to use it as a bedside light–an ideal features for those of us who like to read before bed! (For the record, this post is not sponsored by anyone. I’m sharing these opinions because I think you will really love this product!)
Work it out!
For those of you who are not on a fitness kick at the moment (doesn’t it seem like everyone is after the New Year?), simply waking up and giving your body a good stretch and a few deep breaths makes a world of difference in how you feel. Yes, caffeine, is a wonderful thing, but nothing compares to getting your limbs in action. If you can squeeze it into your morning routine, I highly recommend it! A quick walk on a beautiful day couldn’t hurt, either!
Leave yourself a buffer
Estimate how long it will take you to get to your destination (work, school, daycare, etc.) and then add an extra 10 minutes. This is not so that you can have some extra time to run a load of laundry in the morning–although that would be nice too! It just allows you enough time in the event of construction work, traffic jams, or some other unforeseen circumstance. And if you get to your destination 10 minutes early, you’ll have some time to yourself in the parking lot before heading in (maybe to read an awesome FWATT blog post!). Full disclosure: This is something I strive to do, but it doesn’t always work out–especially with three other people in my house! I’m sure many of you can relate…
